COVID-19 VACCINE UPDATE
as of April 26, 2021

JANSSEN VACCINE UPDATE VA has announced it will resume offering the Johnson & Johnson (Janssen) COVID-19 vaccine to individuals 18 years and older, in accordance with Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) guidance, following a 10-day pause recommended by the CDC and FDA after a very small number of people who received the vaccine experienced rare but serious blood clots. After careful review and evaluation, the FDA and CDC have confidence that this vaccine is safe for use and effective in preventing COVID-19.

The available data shows that the vaccine’s benefits outweigh its risks and the chance of blood clots occurring following its administration is very low. Anyone who is offered the J&J vaccine from VA will receive information about the potential risks and benefits of the vaccine, including the rare risk of blood clots and will be made aware of alternative vaccine options (that is, offered the Moderna vaccine). The primary goal of COVID-19 vaccination is to protect those we serve from COVID-19, and VA’s priority remains the safety of all those receiving vaccine from VA, including Veterans, their spouses, caregivers, employees and federal partners. The JANSSEN Fact Sheet for Recipients and Caregivers has been revised to include information about the risk of this syndrome, which has occurred in a very small number of people who have received the Janssen COVID-19 vaccine.

The Walla Walla VA also administers the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine; you an review the MODERNA Fact Sheet for Recipients and Caregivers for all details.

The Walla Walla VA continues to vaccinate Walla Walla VA health care eligible Veterans and all those named in the SAVE LIVES Act at all clinic locations. Those interested in getting vaccinated can sign up at VA's COVID-19 Vaccine site at the "Stay Informed" page. Once registered, call 509.525.5200 (dial "2" and "2") to schedule an appointment. If you do not have or use a computer, call the Walla Walla VA at 509.525.5200, ext. 26952 and ask for assistance in getting registered. Although vaccine supply is sufficient, note that your employer, pharmacy, health care provider’s office, or local public health officials may be able to offer you a COVID-19 vaccine sooner. You are encouraged to take the first opportunity available to get a vaccine at the most convenient location for you.

Those presenting presenting to the Walla Walla VA (Walla Walla) campus for vaccine appoinments are to report to Bldg. 143 to check in for preliminary screening. Vaccinations are occurring either inside or in the parking lots at the outlying clinic locations. Due to space limitations and need for proper physical distancing, please come alone to your scheduled vaccine appointment. You may bring a caregiver with you if necessary (any other visitors must remain in the vehicle). Please be sure all wears an appropriate mask at all times.

You can STAY UPDATED on Walla Walla VA's current vaccination status at each of its clinic locations at our local Walla Walla VA's COVID-19 Vaccines page. Additional information can be found at the VA's national COVID-19 vaccines at VA page and at the CDC's COVID-19 page.
